Guidelines for attending a Kundalini Yoga Class
Complete and return the New Student Form to the instructor. (attached)
Keep Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and during a class (bring a bottle of water with you).
If possible, arrive ten minutes before a class is due to start. There is a short relaxation period prior to the class starting as well as tuning in which we perform together.
Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo.
Please try not to leave prior to the class ending, as this will disturb your fellow students relaxing and tuning out with The Long Time Sun Song, and ending with
Cards with translations are available for the tuning in and tuning out (mantras).
It is recommended that you undertake any class on an empty stomach; ideally, avoid eating for one or two hours before a class. Bring a piece of fruit to eat after class if you wish. Refrain from drinking alcohol or taking any type of recreational drugs after class.
Please do not come to your Kundalini Yoga class whilst under the influence of alcohol or non-prescriptive drugs.
We recommend wearing loose fitting natural fabric. White is customary and so is a head covering for the meditation, as this will expand your aura and enhances your experience.
Remove your shoes and place them in the designated area before entering the 'sacred space' of the yoga class. Keep talking to a minimum as you enter the class.
This shows respect for the 'sacred space', for yourself and others, and creates an atmosphere beneficial for peaceful meditation.
Your Yoga Teacher can address any questions or queries you have before the start of the class or at the end.
Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo (the Adi Mantra)
I bow to the Creative Wisdom. I bow to the Divine Teacher within.
This mantra is used for "tuning in" to the divine flow and self-knowledge within each of us, and linking us to Yogi Bhajan and the Golden Chain of teachers. It is chanted at least three times at the start of each Kundalini Yoga class.
Aad Guray Nameh
Jugaad Guray Nameh
Sat Guray Nameh
Siri Guru Dayvay Nameh
I bow to the Primal Wisdom. I bow to the Wisdom through the Ages. I bow to the True Wisdom. I bow to the great, unseen Wisdom
This is a mantra of protection and is recited to invoke the protective energy of the universe. Yogi Bhajan taught that this mantra should always be chanted 3 times in a row. This mantra is chanted after tuning in to a class with the Adi Mantra.
May the long time sun
Shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide your way on.
Kundalini Yoga Farewell Mantra, originally sung by the Scottish based hippie-folk band, Incredible String Band.
Truth is my identity. Repeated 3 times.
This mantra reinforces the divine consciousness in everyone. It is used as a greeting as well as the mantra for Kundalini Yoga exercises, inhaling Sat (truth), exhaling Nam (name, identity).
